Naptown Sings and Plays! COVID-19 Update: Online Learning
Hello Naptown Sings and Plays! Families,
First off, I want to wish everyone safety and health over the upcoming weeks. I’m sure we are all scrambling to some extent after yesterday’s announcement by Governor Hogan. We worry about the safety of our friends, families, elders, and little ones during this uncharted territory of times. At Naptown Sings and Plays! we are committed to providing the utmost safety measures to our students, parents, and staff, while still providing the highest quality of music education to our students. I was planning on e-mailing you yesterday with a two-step plan to put in place over the next few weeks, but with recent news, Step 1 has already passed. Please see below for detailed information on how we will proceed in the upcoming weeks:
Effective Immediately: Naptown Sings and Plays! Will
Convert to Online Learning
Despite these trying times, we are prepared to not only persist, but make lemonade out of lemons! Effective immediately, we will convert all lessons and classes to online learning. We will resume in-person classes when Anne Arundel County Public Schools do. A few things to consider as we convert to online learning:
We are not going away, we are just going to screen! All students will still have quality face-time with their instructors. This is a time when students will have little to do as we wait out the viral storm. We ask that students seize the calm (or boredom), and take this time to truly practice, become inspired, and hone their music skills. We can’t think of a better time than now!
Here’s how the conversion to online will work for each program:
All private lessons will convert to live one-on-one (or small group) lessons with the students’ instructors on the same day and time that their lessons are normally are held. Your instructor will be in touch to determine the best platform (Skype, Facetime, Zoom, Google Hangouts etc). I will send a separate e-mail with your teachers’ contact information so you may reach out to them directly, as well. They are excited to continue working with your child and/or you!
Winter Session Final Weeks and Upcoming Glee Club Rehearsals Concerts:
Parents, you will receive an e-mail video lesson from me for your little ones to practice at home. I recommend playing the video at the same day and time that class is held. It will be in a similar format to the live dress rehearsal. At the end of the dress rehearsal, I will ask you to take a minute to record separate videos of your child performing the two songs we have been working on, with some movements(it doesn’t have to be exactly what we practiced), and with the assigned karaoke track (it has to be the exact one we use). I will include a drop-box link to send it to. We will put the videos together to create the cutest virtual choir you have ever seen (similar to this). To get the full effect, we ask that all students participate. It doesn’t have to be perfect!
Elementary, Middle/High School, SELECT and ELITE Glee:
Parents, you will receive two e-mail video lessons from me for your children to practice at home. The first video will be the final rehearsal, and the second video will be the dress rehearsal. All students who have not had a chance to perform round 2 of their solos, duets or trios, will submit a video to me for feedback. At the end of the dress rehearsal, I am asking students to take some time to record separate videos of themselves performing each song we have been working on. Solos, duets and trios, should be sung alone and in full. Unison songs should include movements (it doesn’t have to be exactly what we practiced). Harmony songs should be with a karaoke track, and of the part your child is singing. Each song should be using the exact karaoke track we use: https://naptownsings.com/music/. I will include a drop-box link to send it to. We will put each recording together to create an awesome virtual choir (similar to this) . To get the full effect, we ask that all students participate. It doesn’t have to be perfect!
Winter Musikgarten and Music Immersion Final Classes:
Saturday Musikgarten and Music Immersion parents, you will receive a link from me with with a full Musikgarten class to take with your little. Music Immersion will receive two classes! I recommend pressing play during your regularly scheduled time. Find a comfy place in your house or outside to join in the music. We recommend using a laptop or desktop, cast to TV, and a good speaker, but even a phone will work. Gather up any instruments you have. If you don’t have any, the following household items will work: drum = a plastic basket or bucket or pots and pans, rhythm sticks: wooden utensils or two sticks, egg shaker: put some rice or beans in a Tupperware bowl or cup, or use an unopened K cup, scarves: tissues, paper towels, or an actual towel, hoops: a hula hoop, anything round, or your child’s imagination, free for all instruments: literally anything you can shake, bang on, strum, or explore.
SPRING SESSION: Online Classes Until We Can Meet Live!
Right now, schools are scheduled to be back in session by the start of the Spring session on March 30th. However, if things change, we will stay the course and provide online learning until it is safe to resume in person:
Spring Session Glee Clubs:
For the Spring Session, Glee Club classes will be held via Zoom, a free interactive learning and meeting platform. In the comfort of their homes, students will follow their teacher’s live instructions to improve their singing. We will still touch on every single aspect of Glee, learning proper singing techniques, posture, breathing, placement, tone quality. We will still learn group songs that include melody and harmony, and will still perform solos, duets and trios. Students will still receive individualized feedback from me, and we will still have a performance! How? If schools re-open, so will our facility. If not, our final concert will be an online performance, where each student video records his or her parts and submits it to their instructor. Take a look here to see how it works. Students will be provided PDF’s of their sheet music. Pick-up of sheet music and materials will also be available at the Naptown Sings and Plays! studio.
Musikgarten and Music Immersion: Spring Musikgarten parents, each week you will receive a link from me with with a full Musikgarten class to take with your little one. I recommend pressing play during your regularly scheduled day and time (though you may use each video multiple times throughout the week). Find a comfy place in your house or outside to join in the music. We recommend using a laptop or desktop, cast to TV, and a good speaker, but even a phone will work. We will prepare a small instrument pack at no cost to each student, to be picked up at Naptown Sings and Plays! We will also provide links to optional instruments for purchase.
Spring Homeschool Classes:
and Other Group Classes (start date March 17th): For the Spring Session, Recorder and Music Immersion will be held via Zoom, an online interactive learning/meeting platform. In the comfort of their homes, students will follow their teacher’s live instructions to learn their instruments of choice and/or to make musical fun. I will provide an instrument pack free of charge for the general music class students, to be picked up at the Naptown Sings and Plays! studio. PDFs of materials and music will be provided, as well. We will also have all music and materials (including recorders) available for pick-up at the Naptown Sings and Plays! studio. Spring Piano students, I am awaiting a plan from Jason to see if piano class will be feasible. I will be in touch. Guitar students, please be in touch with Ben about setting up virtual lessons!
We appreciate you sticking with us and staying the course during these otherwise trying times. For small businesses like Naptown Sings and Plays!, that have been built from the ground up, a pandemic can leave a dent in a business that some may never come back from. We are determined to not let that happen. We are committed to providing the highest quality and awesomest music education we always have, even if it means online for awhile. We promise we have you covered, and that you won’t be disappointed. With any questions, please e-mail me directly: firstname.lastname@example.org.
